CPLA logoStrategic HR:  Organization and Personnel Management

Instructor: Jeanne Goodrich

Course Structure/Delivery:

This two-day program will provide librarians with a variety of Human Resource (HR) management tools that they can use strategically in order to accomplish their service goals. The workshop is interactive and it includes a variety of group exercises based on a case study about a medium-sized county library with multiple branches.  Using the same case study throughout the training will give participants an opportunity to apply what they are learning in a practical way in the “real” library – and to see the effects of the decisions they make throughout the two-day program.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to understand and apply the difference between tactical and strategic HR, analyze their library’s organizational structure to determine suitability for achieving their strategic goals, identify the activities that must be undertaken to achieve their goals, analyze and describe jobs through written job descriptions, create recruitment plans that will attract candidates with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required, select the right person for the job, plan and evaluate job performance, and choose from among a variety of staff development and retention strategies, based on local needs and requirements.
